How to Prepare for a Meeting With Your Legislator

Meeting your elected officials in person is one of the most effective ways to influence legislation. This guide will help you make your visit count — whether it’s in Nashville or at your local district office.

What Is a Lobby Visit?

A lobby visit is simply a face-to-face meeting with your legislator — an opportunity to share your concerns, present facts, and ask for support or opposition on key bills. You don’t have to be a professional to make an impact.

Where and How to Schedule a Meeting

  • You don’t have to drive to Nashville. Many legislators are available at local offices or will meet constituents at events or during district days.
  • Request the meeting in writing. Follow up with a phone call and offer a few date/time options.
  • Be clear and concise. Tell them what bill you want to discuss and your position on it.
  • Make sure they know you’re a constituent.

How to Prepare for the Meeting

  • Review the specific bill(s) ahead of time.
  • Bring a printed one-pager or summary — TFA may provide templates.
  • Prepare a brief personal story or example.
  • Practice your talking points with a friend.
  • If going with others, keep the group small (2–4 people) and assign roles.

During the Meeting

  • Be respectful, be confident, and thank them for their time.
  • Start by introducing yourself and stating you live in their district.
  • Get to the point — explain the bill, your stance, and why it matters to you.
  • Use facts, but also tell your story — real examples are powerful.
  • Ask for their support (or opposition) and request a commitment.
  • Leave your summary document behind.

Following Up

  • Send a thank-you email or letter within 24–48 hours.
  • If they asked for additional information, provide it quickly.
  • Share your meeting experience with TFA (optional) to help coordinate future efforts.
  • Stay in contact — one meeting can be the start of a long-term relationship.
